Bridge Facilities in India

In this section I would be putting together all the information regarding bridge facilities in the various cities in India.The information may be sketchy at present but would be made comprehensive in future.

Tournament News

In this section I would cover tournaments happening in India and more so the tournaments happening in Northern part of India and in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

Narayandas Rathi memorial Poona Club bridge championship took place at Poona Club, Pune from August 3-6, 2000. Sanghavi & Chaudhari won the pairs event.

23rd HINDALCO bridge championship took place at Renukoot from July 21-23, 2000. Pritish Kushari's four (Pritish Kushari, Asim Mukherji, S Bannerji, S Mukherji, S Chaudhari, Deobrat) won duplicate event amongst 60 teams. Pairs event was won by P Bardhan & P Paul.

Golcha memorial bridge tournament would take place at Jai Club, Jaipur from October 13-15, 2000.

WBF is organising Mind Sports Organization's Worldwide Simultaneous Pairs on August 22 and August 23, 2000. It would be on the lines of Fifth Friday Championship organised by Herman De Wael. The magnitude of the championship would be higher with about 10000 tables results being compiled together.

Deal of the Week

In this section I would cover one good deal which appeared in the Weekly Bridge Tournaments at Lucknow or in a recent tournament with explanations.

Jacobs team won the International team trial. Larry Cohen and David Berkowitz were palying for the team.

This week's deal shows good bidding judgement by Cohen & Berkowitz.

David Berkowitz sitting East opened weak 2 which Cohen raised to four. North now came in with 4 . Most East would have passed this bid but Berkowitz judged to make a bid of 5 which Cohen raised to six. South came in with 6 which Cohen doubled and that is where the deal was played.

The contract went five down. At the other table EW allowed North to play 4 doubled which went only 3 down. Sound bidding judgement thus resulted in a swing of 12 IMP for Berkowitz & Cohen.
