WBF is organising Mind Sports Organization's Worldwide Simultaneous Pairs on August 22 and August 23, 2000. It would be on the lines of Fifth Friday Championship organised by Herman De Wael. The magnitude of the championship would be higher with about 10000 tables results being compiled together.

17th European Youth team Chmpionship is taking place at Turkey. This week's deal is from a practice match between Turkey and Netherlands and shows a good piece of defending.

At both the tables contract was 3 S by South and both Wests led singleton D.

The dutch dfender gave a D ruff indicating suit preference for C which was duly shifted to get another D ruff. The contract thus went one down.

The Turkish defender had other ideas.

He shifted to a trump after getting the first D ruff. Declarer won the trick and played back another S which was won with Ace. Now C was shifted to and another ruff was taken. The trump shift ensured that declarer had no entry left in dummy to enjoy his Ds. In the end he had to lose couple of C trick as well and he went three down.

The routine defence of two immediate D ruffs leaves declarer with an entry in S to enjoy the Ds.

Very well defended by Turkish defender.
