US international team trials took place at Memphis. Jacobs team won the trials and earned a right to represent US in the Olympiad.
This week's deal is from Semi Final between Nickell & Jacobs. Playing for Jacobs were Howard Weinstein & Steve Garner as EW and Jeff Meckstroth and Eric Rodwell were NS playing for Nickell in this deal.
Weinstein opened 1
which Meckstroth overcalled 1
.Rodwell's 2 NT was four card trump limit raise
which Weinstein doubled to show good values. The auction ended with Garner playing 4
which was doubled by Rodwell.
Looking at all the cards a
lead defeats the contract and a
lead virtually ensures the contract.
Rodwell led
Ace yet the contract was defeated due to the imaginative defence of Meckstroth.
After Ace Rodwell shifted to
but Garner rose with Ace and pitched losing
on
King.Now he
ruffed a
and played a trump towards his A J. Rodwell had to split his honours and Garner won the Ace. Now he ruffed a
and played another trump. Rodwell won the trump Jack and tapped dummy again with a
.Now if
s are played well , there is
no way can this contract be defeated.
Steve Garner thought for a while and played
Queen on which Meckstroth played 10!!
Garner repeated
finesse and was shocked to find Meckstroth winning with King. Now Meckstroth played a
. Garner could have ruffed
in hand but Rodwell would discard a
and Garner would not be able to remove trumps before yielding a trick to Rodwell. The makable contract went down.
Excellently defended.
