  • Tournament News
  • In this section I would cover tournaments happening in India and more so the tournaments happening in Northern part of India and in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

WBF is organising Mind Sports Organization's Worldwide Simultaneous Pairs on August 22 and August 23, 2000. It would be on the lines of Fifth Friday Championship organised by Herman De Wael. The magnitude of the championship would be higher with about 10000 tables results being compiled together.

  • Deal of the Week
  • In this section I would cover one good deal which appeared in the Weekly Bridge Tournaments at Lucknow or in a recent tournament with explanations.

This week's deal is from local duplicate event at Lucknow.

    Bidding

    SouthWestNorthEast
    1 CPass1 SPass
    2 CPass2 HPass
    6 NTPassPassPass

This week a deal on simple card play.

South opens strong 17+ HCP C. North responds positively by bidding one S and then bids two H on south's two C. South ends the auction by bidding 6 NT.

How would you play this deal ?

It is evident that S finesse is mandadory. So you have 6 Cs, 3 Hs & 2 S tricks for eleven tricks. Twelfth trick comes from D King if D Ace is correct.

H lead indicates that it is from singleton or doubleton.

In reality first trick went to H 8 , 9 & Q. Declarer then took S finesse and played on C. After cashing all the Cs declarer also cashed S J & H Ace. East was now feeling the pressure and couldn't guard two Hs and two Ds and had to bare D Ace. Declarer threw him in by playing small D and he had to concede two H tricks to the dummy.

A simple play made more elegant.
