This week's deal is from SpinGold Knockout teams of the 71st Summer NABC which was held at San Antonio, Texas and shows Zia Mahmood in action.
Zia who has qualified to represent USA as a member of USA II team in the Bermuda Bowl to be held later in the year was West in this deal. He was playing for Richard Schwartz team.
Zia opened 1 Heart which was doubled by North and redoubled by East. South came in with 2 Spades which showed values so North could bid 4 Spades over Zia's 4 Hearts. After cue bid sequence in Club and Diamond by East West , Zia settled to play the contract in 5 Heart.
North led Spade Ace and then made South cash the other top Spade after which South shifted to a Diamond.
Zia went up with Diamond Ace and cashed Heart Ace on which North showed out.
Now Zia played a club and finessed dummy's club ten!
On Club Ace went a Diamond loser and Club honour continuation was ruffed by South and overruffed by Zia who took out the remaining trump, entered the dummy with 6 of Heart and pitched his Diamond loser on dummy's remaining high Club to make his contract.
Explanation came later as he thought for his double North should have four Clubs as he didn't have any Hearts so it was very likely that North may have started with Jack of Clubs.
