Steve Castellino scored most of the matchpoints on this deal in Red Ribbon pairs. He was defending the contract of 2 NT by West.
Castellino led the 8 which went to 9, 2 & 10. Declarer played the 4 to dummy's
queen and when that held, he ran the 9 to North's jack. Castellino persisted with a which went to 7, 3 & queen. Declarer now played a , and
inserted dummy's jack when North played low. The 6 was then passed to North's king.
Castellino knew his partner needed two entries to establish and run
the s. The A was one entry but how to get him in a second time?
Castellino then hit on the idea that partner might hold the 10, so he
exited with the Q. Declarer won the king and played a to the 9
and North's 10. Castellino now underled the A. South won and played a
. Eventually regained the lead with the A to defeat the contract one trick.
