51st UP State Bridge Championship at Meerut 2023

51st UP State Bridge Championship & 10th Alexander Athletic Club, Meerut Invitational Bridge Championship for Northern India took place at Alexander Athletic Club, Meerut from September 8-10, 2023. 18 teams including 10 UP teams, 4 from Delhi , 1 from Dehradun & 3 others took part in the Championship. The event was very well organised by Meerut Bridge Association. The whole show was superbly managed by Sri CP Agarwal ably assisted by Sri Pullak Garga & Sri Rakesh Goel. Alexander Club also deserves credit for supporting bridge. This is the 3rd time Meerut is holding UP State Championship with first being in 2015 & second being in 2019. Sri Sant Parkash Sharma was CTD. Sri TC Pant looked after technical work very efficiently.

From 2012 the UP State Championship was made open to neighbouring states with a new trophy being instituted for best non UP team since 2018.

Lal Sriram Agarwal Trophy for Best UP Team, Nimita Agarwal Trophy (Alexander Club) for overall winner, Madhava Prasad Trophy for Swiss League winner and Dr JS Kothiwal Trophy for Best non UP Team in Duplicate Event

18 teams took part in the event and played 7 rounds of swiss league of 8 boards after which 6 teams qualified for Super League. Kosmos, Delhi - 94.44 topped the swiss league followed by Delhi Blues - 93.92, Sangam - 86.35 finished third, Pals, Lucknow - 82.94 were fourth, RS Misra, Prayagraj - 82.43 were fifth and Adda - 81.6 were last team to qualify. After 5 rounds of super league of 10 boards each the final results are:

2. Kosmos, Delhi (TC Pant, Daleep Mutreja, Rajesh Kumar Jain, JB Sengupta) - 62.54 Swiss League Winners of Madhava Prasad Trophy
3. RS Misra, Prayagraj (Shankar Chatterjee, Sunil Mishra, Rakesh Bagga, BN Agarwal, Jitendra Pandey, Shree Prakash Sharma) - 56.49 UP State Champions and Winners of Lala Sriram Agarwal Trophy
4. Adda, Delhi (Ambrish Wadera, Devi Bhatnagar, Ashok Sinha, Anil Bharihoke) - 56.21
5. Sangam (Sanjay Amist, Tarun Singhal, Umesh Singh, Amar Bose) - 32.43
6. Pals, Lucknow (Shantanu Rastogi, Vipin Rai, Deepak Srivastava, TP Khare, Anil Bansal) - 28.38



This is 26th time teams from Prayagraj (Allahabad) have become State Champions. The other winners are Lucknow 12, Moradabad 4, Varanasi 3, Kanpur 2, Nainital (undivided UP) 1, Singrauli 1, Aligarh 1, Johri, Baghpat - 1. Ever since state championship was made open to neighbouring states thrice teams from outside UP have come first.

VC Agarwal Trophy for Duplicate Silver Event

There was a Silver event for non qualifiers of Duplicate event. 11 teams took part in the event. They played swiss league of 6 rounds of 8 boards each. The results are as follows:

1. Doon royal, Dehradun (B Roy, TK Mandal, Rahul Agarwal, Yashpal Singh) - 83.53
2. Col Sabharwal, Delhi/Noida (Col KK Sabharwal, BS Nayyar, Pradeep Prakash, Awadhesh Goyal) - 76.07
3. Tigers (Kr Vijayanand Singh, Pradeep Singh, Girish Kumar, Anil Upadhyay) - 73.8



IK Agarwal Trophy for Best UP Pair & Surendra Singh Gupta Trophy (Alexander Club) for Overall Pair Winner in IMP Pairs Event

40 pairs took part in the event. The event was played over two sessions on final day of 20 boards each with Scrambelled Mitchell movement. From 2018 the event is played as IMP pair event instead of Matchpoints. The results are as follows:
