50th UP State Bridge Championship at Lucknow 2022

50th UP State Bridge Championship took place at Sham-e-Awadh Hall, MB Club, Lucknow from June 17-19, 2022. This Championship was due to take place in 2020 but had to be postponed due to pandemic. 20 teams including 14 UP teams & 6 Non UP teams took part in the Championship. The UP players were from Lucknow, Kanpur, Prayagraj, Aligarh, Meerut, Moradabad, Varanasi, Renukoot, Singrauli, Noida & Johri Village, Baghpat. The three Johri village teams were not charged any entry fee either in team or pair events. The non UP players were from Delhi, Ranchi, Patna, Chandigarh & Karnal. UP players residing in Bengal also took part. The event was very well organised by Lucknow Bridge Association led by its dynamic President Wg Cdr GK Johri. This is the 12th time Lucknow is holding UP State Championship with last time being in 2014. Sri Sant Parkash Sharma was CTD. Sri TC Pant looked after technical work very efficiently.

From 2012 the UP State Championship was made open to neighbouring states inviting one team each with a new trophy being instituted for best non UP team since 2018.

Late Lala Sriram Agarwal Trophy for Best UP Team, Madhava Prasad Trophy for Swiss League Winner and Sahu Ravi Prakash Trophy for Best non UP Team in Duplicate Event

20 teams took part in the event and played 7 rounds of swiss league of 8 boards after which 6 teams qualified for Super League. Ajay Agarwal - 107.15 topped the swiss league followed by Vagdepas - 93.02, Pals - 86.83 finished third, Constellation, Delhi - 82.95 was fourth, Jai Jawan Jai Kisan - 82.04 was fifth & Nawabs - 79.77 was last team to qualify. After 5 rounds of super league of 10 boards each the final results are:

1. Jai Jawan Jai Kisan, Johri village, Baghpat (Vipin Kumar, Monu Kumar, Monu Kumar Anchar, Sanjeev Kumar, Pradeep Tomar) - 64.11 UP State Champion and Winners of Lala Sriram Agarwal Trophy
2. Pals (TP Khare, Jitendra Pande, Vikas Mohan Gupta, HS Dua, Anil Bansal, Umesh Kumar Singh) - 52.54
3. Ajay Agarwal (Ajay Agarwal, Om Hari Agarwal, Mukul Goel, CP Agarwal, Pullak Garga, RA Siddiqui) - 48.51 Swiss League Winner and Winner of Madhava Prasad Trophy
4. Vagdepas (Kr Vijayanand Singh, Pradeep Anand Singh, Girish Kumar, Anil Upadhyay, Deepak Kothiwal) - 46.80
5. Constellation, Delhi (Amarjit, Dr Nikita Kamal, TC Pant, Asha Sharma) - 46.37 Best Non UP Team and Winner of Sahu Ravi Prakash Trophy
6. Nawabs (Yogendra Deva, Amit Nangpal, Prakash Gupta, PK Mishra) - 41.67


This is historic victory for Jai Jawan Jai Kisan team who hail from Johri Village busting a myth that bridge is only an urban sport. The players were mostly under 30 years of age and three of them have played for UP in Junior Nationals. In western UP a card game of Duhatti is very popular. All these players have graduated from there to bridge.

VC Agarwal Trophy for Duplicate Silver Event

There was a Silver event for non qualifiers of Duplicate event. 14 teams took part in the event. They played swiss league of 5 rounds of 8 boards each. The results are as follows:

2. NCR Green (GP Aggarwal, PC Gupta, Tushar Moghe, Vijay Gupta) - 65.15

JK Lohia Trophy for Best UP Pair in IMP Pairs Event

50 pairs took part in the event. The event was played over two sessions on final day of 20 boards each with Scrambelled Mitchell movement. From 2018 the event is played as IMP pair event instead of Matchpoints. The results are as follows:
